for real though: dickinson was still an american patriot who fought for american independence to protect his countrymen, even if he didn't agree with them. also he freed all of his slaves at one point.

Ah, excellent. The musical 1776 is probably the reason I became a history major... so this made me laugh probably more than it should.

Oh man, sometimes I don't recognize when you draw Adams because it doesn't look like William Daniels. D: Could 1776 perhaps be. . . too powerful?

Poor Adams, he just didn't understand why everyone else wasn't as smart and principled and self-sacrificing and RIGHT ALL THE TIME as he was! You can't blame a man for that! But he won in the end cos he got to marry Abigail.

I am swelling with American pride at this. Kate Beaton you are my hero.

The faces of Adams and Franklin at the top capture their personalities wonderfully.

Pick on Dickinson, but he does get the best song and the best line, which is still true today:

Hancock: Traitors, Mr. Dickinson? To what? The British crown, or the British half-crown? Fortunately there are not enough men of property in America to dictate policy

John Dickinson: Perhaps not. But don't forget that most men without property would rather protect the possibility of becoming rich, than face the reality of being poor.

A great film and a great musical - I've seen it live a few times, though I didn't get to see Brent Spiner's Adams (I do have it on CD, however)

Is it sad that I'm totally down with the idea of founding fathers dancing, singing, and making penis jokes, but I twitch through the chorus of Cool, Cool, Considerate Men because the whole "ever to the right" bit is anachronistic (i.e. from the French Revolution)?

I think that's probably sad.

*nods* William Daniels as John Adams, singing and snarking, is one of the finest and dare I say one of the sexiest things in cinema.

I made a 1776 related post about Adams and Franklin last year, but my journal is friends-only so I will paste it here:

I know a lot of lines and phrases in the musical 1776 are from actual historical documents, but I am still thrilled when I discover a new one - particularly when I always assumed it was modern. Well, it has happened again. From page xvi of Gary B. Nash's The Unknown American Revolution, Penguin Press, 2005:

"The history of our revolution," fretted John Adams, "will be one continued lie from one end of the other. The essence of the whole will be that Dr. Franklin's electric rod smote the earth and out sprang George Washington."

Nash continues:

Adams complained endlessly about how Franklin was overrated and underhanded, and it pained him immensely to think that the story would go on "that Franklin electrified [Washington] with his rod, and henceforward these two conducted all the policy negotiations, legislatures, and war."

The musical dropped the "one continued lie" line and added Washington's horse making it "the three of them: Franklin, Washington - and the horse ..." but the text is otherwise identical.
