A Magical Day

« previous entry | next entry »

My father is an excellent gardener, and could grow enough vegetables to keep up fed all through the winter. Turnips are amazing because they are root vegetables and so if you pick them and put them in soil in the cellar they last for ages and ages. For more information about turnips, see every day of my childhood.

My grandpa used to grow the best carrots. He'd pull one right out of the ground, wash 'er up with the garden hose, and hand it to you. Instant deliciousness.

I also had a childhood stocked well with turnips. My dad's excuse was that his parents were Canadian and that is what he grew up with, my mom's excuse was that her family were farmers and that is what she grew up with. I firmly believe they just wanted us kids to have tremendous farts that inhibited our social lives.

Did you eat the turnip greens too, or just the roots?

In the southern United States, turnip greens (along with mustard greens and collard greens) are a beloved vegetable, though turnip roots less so.

Any chance of a continuing strip of Mr Wanka's mad-cap root vegetable based adventures?

eating fresh picked peas was the summer snack of my childhood. We'd never get a big enough batch to boil for dinner because we'd eat too many ripe peas before they made it to the table.

And now tomatoes... Every year now, we try to grow at least one tomato bush (this year we succeeded in two healthy tomato bushes) and end up with more tomatoes than we can stick on BLTs and salads... I'm glad I learned to love tomatoes as an adult, I couldn't stand them as a kid, and feel bad that I missed out.

Mmmm. Nothing is better than a summer-warm tomato picked off the vine, with some nice cold cottage cheese with salt and pepper. That takes me back.
