No man, this is South America

Sucre was Bolivar's right hand man for sure (matching hairdos and everything baby), but I think he had a much different approach to leadership and I really wonder how different the outcome of the Spanish American wars of independence would have been if hadn't been assassinated just as he was poised to be Bolivar's obvious successor. I am definitely no expert in this area, but perhaps he would have had more success keeping the whole thing together the way Bolivar intended.

By the way, I'm changing the name of my comic to Generals And Some Other Guys

Also, check out this game my friend Kiril helped to do for the iphone! Iphones can do anything, it's crazy. If I had one I'd break it though because I can't have nice things.

I guess my talk of south american politics helped a little. Bolivar was actually pretty brutal to slaves. not so much the people's hero. fascinating stuff.

I was reading about Bolivar when we were talking! But eventually I came to find Sucre more interesting, and perhaps more the people's hero

Kate,

I am considering making the trip from Florida to Maryland so that I can attend this year's Small Press Expo. I know you are on the list of this year's convention, but in general, can you tell me if the expo is as cool as it would seem to be?

This comic looks gorgeous Kate! All the little details in their outfits are GREAT!! Also, I don't know what he actually looks like, but Sucre looks ... SEXY. Maybe I just have a thing for sort of passive dudes in uniform? Now there is a fetish for you!

So are the next generals going to be wearing camouflage? Or are they just going to try to stand out in a group photo?

(you really need to go to the hi-res version to fully enjoy the expressions on their faces)

Kate Beaton has done a comic about Latin American history! It is as if everything I love in the universe is on a single web page.

While not nearly as important as Bolivar, my favorite Latin American war hero is the poor mule who decided Costa Rica's first civil war while Bolivar was off doing important things:

The second panel, with Bolivar and his big "WHAT" is gorgeous :D

Oh!!!
You must try a comic with San Martín... is one of our heroes here (I'm from Chile, and San Martín is like Bolivar, but in the south-south america, hahaha)

Oh my god Kate! Thank you so much for this comic! Latin american history is so interesting and there's so many chances for humour (and hell it'd make some awesome films too). I'm from Argentina myself and every time I see a good historical fiction or comedy I always think we need more of that with Latin American history. So yeah!

(Also, forgot to say, the one about the Irish war of independence you did a while back was fantastic! I now live in Ireland so, again, very close to home)

Do you still take suggestions for history-based comics? If so it'd be great to see something about Jose Gervasio Artigas! Did you know he was betrayed by the government of Buenos Aires five times? All because he wanted to give peasants some land instead of landowners. He was awesome.

There is a movie about Bolivar but I've only seen clips of it on youtube with no subtitles :c

Artigas sounds like one of the first presidents of Haiti who did the same thing (I forget his name) but he actually did it (it ruined the economy though)

kate beaton this is great
also it properly conveys how bolívar and sucre were dashing and mysterious while we got stuck with a conceited jerk (Carrera) and some guy who was alright but looked like a creepy ginger weirdo (O'Higgins)

there are so many documentaries and movies joking about how everything in latin america since independence was totally awful! theres this argentinean tv series where they teach about this guy who was a general and looted like a ton of gold from the spanish and was like "heeey how about we use it to build five schools for poor children, wouldn't that be nice", and then it shows how none of them got built at all, the guy dies of pneumonia in the miuntains, and roughly a hundred years later Perón tries to build one of those schools but it takes like thirty years to open, and then it closes because the nation enters bankruptcy

Your spiffy drawings of Bolivar reminds me: you know who deserves a Kate Beaton comic? Gregor MacGregor, that's who! A wastrel British soldier, who later fought for Bolivar (and eventually for whomever would pay him), he is most famous for inventing a Central American country (called "Poyais"), naming himself King, and convincing a bunch of luckless mopes to move there. Surprise! You all get malaria and die in the middle of nowhere. There's a pretty good book about him and his Poyais scheme called The Land that Never Was: Sir Gregor MacGregor and the Most Audacious Fraud in History, by David Sinclair. If you like the history of cads and scoundrels, you will enjoy this book!

Whenver I encounter someone shouting "WHAT" I invariably think of Darth Vader.*

This was the natural conclusion.

You know how he shouts "WHAT?" when his wingman is shot just as he's about to shoot Luke's X-Wing? Yeah I'm a nerd.
