Maurice "the Rocket" Richard for Kids

« previous entry | next entry »

Another little sketch comic I did.

I've always loved Maurice Richard, he was my father's favorite when he was a boy. There is no talking about the Rocket without putting a link to The Sweater, but if you're interested in him, read about the Richard Riot, his funeral, his status as a cultural hero, it's all very interesting indeed.

Do you speak French to people when they come to your province? No? Why not?

Not only was he a darn good hockey player but he also had some magnificent eyebrows. We're talking runner-up to Leonid Brezhnev's here.

Maurice Richard is my hockey hero. Reading about the riot, his funeral, etc honestly brings tears to my eyes. Thank you for putting together this wonderful mini-comic!

I think Maurice was the kind of man that would make anyone love hockey. I never got the change to meet him but I understand why he's a hero to you, he's a hero for lots of people. I don't know much about hockey pool but I knew who Maurice Richard was, this tells a lot about his notoriety.

I wish hockey still had that good ol' Stompin' Tom/the new $5 bill/Maurice Richard flavour to it. (if it ever did, that is; how can I know for sure)

My child self would enjoy these comics so much, but I think my adult self is enjoying them enough anyway!

I was just thinking this. Now it's much more "Death & Head Injuries And Young Men Growing Up To Be Emotionally Stunted And Unable To Relate To Women Who Aren't Puck Bunnies, Ahoy!"

Yay for language! And Canadian hockey heroes! Both favorite topics of mine, although I'll admit I'm only a novice of the second one, after hearing all about Wayne Gretzky from Kevin Smith when I saw his Evening With Kevin Smith in Seattle a half a year ago or so.

I love his little half-shrug at the end!

I met him once, a few months, maybe a year before he died. I told him how much I admired him and I got his autograph. He was all alone at a stand, it was kinda sad.

I like it!

I also loved the sweater, too, but what introduced me to the Rocket even before that was a book called "The Value of Tenacity." Fun series that explored lots of historical characters, I should go looking for them again when I visit my folks.

We had them at school and I swear every students were snatching it away from one another, especially when new ones would arrive.

When I was young, Maurice Richard came to our school. My knowledge of hockey history was shaky at best (I knew my current Canadian players), but I knew he was important from stories my parents and grandparents told me.

Funny how these days, some people are complaining how there should be more francophone players in the Canadian's team, so the language subject is still very much important.

I love those little historical vignettes you're doing. I wish I had those in my history manuals at school.

When playing the Canadian version of Trivial Pursuit, "Maurice 'The Rocket' Richard" is my answer for every single sports question. Even if it has nothing to do with hockey.

Most Canadians are too polite to say it but in Maurice Richard's day being a great hockey player meant that you had to skate well, and it meant that you had to control the puck well, and it meant that you had to aim and shoot well, and also, IT MEANT THAT YOU HAD TO BE TOTALLY BRUTAL AND VIOLENT. And Maurice Richard certainly was all of that.

I just showed this to my mom, who grew up in Montreal and followed the Canadiens, and she said it was cute. :D

I was also telling her about some of the other comics you've done, like the one about the prime minister who looked like a pug. There was a long pause, and she was like "Diefenbaker? Nah, he looked like an owl."
