I made a comic for my mother yesterday, who has believed in my abilities longer and more fiercely than anyone else. You can find it here.

Your mom is awesome. So are you.

While I'm sure that stupid artist woman is languishing in obscurity.

Aww; this is the first mother's-day related thing I've seen that didn't make me want to vomit. And it's meaningful.. to you, your mother and family, and to people trying to find a way to do what they love... so yay for 'cartoonish' and boo to [scurrilous tone on:] painting.

I <3 your Dad's last words on the subject.

I love how they have their own way. I'm glad I read to the end even though it was painful! Those words hurt so much more when we are younger and we don't know that the "adults" don't know any better. They seem like the gatekeepers to a wider world and we need them to give us the okay. Your parents are/were right. So glad for them and you.

Your mum & dad are quite right! "Art" is an incredibly huge term that covers so many different areas, you can't assume that someone with a lot of experience in one area even speaks the same language as you & your area (and no, I don't mean Canadianese!). I have a few very artistically-talented friends, but they work in very different areas... someone who's brilliant in oil painting may not have anything useful to say to someone who's learning something even as similar as watercolor painting, let alone the comic stuff you do - which is awesome, and completely legit, BTW! Not to mention that just being talented at something - even if it's the exact thing you're interested in - doesn't mean they know squat about how to teach it.

I've been tinkering with learning sketching & painting stuff myself for a while now; I'd love to be able to do stuff like you someday, but it's really just a hobby for my own entertainment. Your work is something I never get tired of looking at & always look forward to seeing an update in my feed - I haven't seen anyone as able to communicate such great emotions in their characters' faces. You really do have talent, and it really is worthwhile. What your parents both said x10!
