This of course being the second particularly Canadian comic in a row, but mind you it was on the list! Now, the quotes in the first panel are instantly recognized by we Canucks, but to those of you who aren't familiar with a certain video clip starring Mr. James Naismith of Ontario please watch the following video:

"But I need these child labourers back."

SO BEST. Ever. Well, the joke, not child labourers. Or maybe that makes us awful for laughing at child labour jokes...? Ah well, it can't be helped. I stand by my first reaction.

Hee! I was recently introduced to the Heritage Minutes as an impending Canadian transplant, and they are just. . .part of history.

Lady, it is so time to do one on 'Burnt Toast'. Can you imagine the possibilities! Not to mention all the jokes about poking around someone's brain!

Waaay better than the one about the french dude running York/Toronto and the little kids who wanted to keep their english names in Quebec. :D

my grade six teacher was obsessed with Canadian history and politics, more or less to the complete neglect of every other subject, with the exception of fractions and computer programming (on 15-year-old early '80s Macs)

among the many vaguely ridiculous things we did was watch hours and hours of Heritage Minute tapes

As a proud Springfieldian, it is my solemn duty to say that James Naismith invented basketball in Springfield, though! We have a peach festival every year and serve peach soda. Not as fun or tasty as either one sounds.

I continue to <3 this comic however, despite our invention being totally stolen by Ontario by reason of birth.

That's true...I never considered the lack of peaches in Almonte, Ontario. It is Almonte, right? I know it's somewhere around here...they even have a little museum set up that I've been in.

I guess it all depends whether you celebrate the man, or the invention. Ontario gets to celebrate their contribution of the birth of the man, and Springfield gets to celebrate their contribution of the setting for the invention!

It always mildly upset me that the custodian's protest that he needs those baskets back was blithely overruled, without so much as being acknowledged. As he says he needs them back, we fade to a shot of the bottoms being cut out. No-one says "Well, I'm afraid you have no say in the matter." or "Oh please, please can we mutilate your baskets?" or "I'm sorry I didn't hear you la la la OOPS there we go now what were you saying before?"

Bloody gym class.

I think he cut a small hole instead of the whole bottom, so peaches wouldn't fall out. At least, I'd guess that's why they used a broom handle to pop them out instead of just making the hole big enough to have the ball fall through...

The peach basket did not have to lose its bottom! They actually drilled a hole in the bottom so they could poke the ball out with a stick.

I still lul'd!

Definatly a Hip reference in the title, though I'm hard pressed to make the connection between a song about a strip joint and Mr. Naismith's invention on b-ball. Peaches maybe??

The comic is great as well. Never saw the sweatshop angle coming, but then again, that's why we keep coming back. We never know where your fertile imagination will take us. Keep dribblin' that shit, Ms. Kate.

"But I need these gotchies back".

I also remember they spoofed the medical lecture one too.

Gah! I'd buy this. Can I buy this?

Reading this was a trip. It's frightening how ingrained those images are on my adult mind. Is it depressing that I always think of those commercials when people debate the Canadian national identity? That and the awesomest money.
