Yeah dude, JP was like a big ol' teddy bear. This new guy, I don't know what it is, but whenever I see a picture of him he just looks like he's gonna try and eat me.

Yeah, me too. I didn't agree with three quarters of his views, but he seemed a decent enough guy. When they held World Youth Day in Toronto a few years back and he was there, we catered a large event for youths from around the world who had come to see him as they stopped through Oshawa on their way. I just marvelled at how the ol' guy could really bring folks together, especially these kids who hailed from Africa and South America and Australia we were serving food to. The new guy pales in comparison...

Katy - it's been forever! I just listened to your CBC interview and it sounded awesome. If you were to make these into a book/hoodie/low-rent t-shirt, I would definitely be the first to lay down my credit card in some sketchy online purchase kind of way.
This is so great. I can't wait to show it to my mom. We have commemorative JPII hand towels in our laundry room from his visit to Baltimore in the 90's.
I love all of your comics though, the ones from the French Revolution are probably my favorite. :)

I would post more full size if when you clicked on it, it didn't take you to photobucket because then people link to that and I already have enough internet things!

I'm always thrown a little when you bring the serious and spiritual to us. I guess the first thing that occurs to me is that I think of people of Scottish heritage as being Protestant, so the fascination with JP II always seems out of left field. The second thing that strikes me is a bit of discomfort. As a fallen away Catholic, I suppose you stir some deep seated guilt feelings in me when you do a JP II comic.
But the over riding feeling is how you impress me with your obvious depth of affection for the church, and more broadly, your past in general. You do it with your typical humor, but there is sweetness and nostalgic wistfulness that comes shining through. The Tesla's and guillotine dances make me laugh out loud, but your comics about your church, your family, and your home town make me laugh and think about deeper things.
I know you don't take praise very well, but your talents are quite remarkable. Yay for you for sharing, and yay for us for being able to get these regular postings from a truly gifted person. Thanks.

thank you! Yes, I was raised very Catholic and have a great respect for it. I guess you (or, I) tend to make comics about things you feel strongly about, and there are many things I do but maybe they don't seem related on the surface all the time.

One of my favorite quotes of JP... He was asked by a reporter, "How many people work at the Vatican?"
For a long moment he was silent and thoughtful looking, and then he gave a sheepish little grin and said, "About half."
