The Father of Lies

« previous entry | next entry »

I do love how at the start of Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War, he rips into Herodotus for being a total liar. They both wrote history, though Herodotus was more interested in stories and Thucydides more interested in facts.

Anyway, I was in the middle of drawing the one about Joseph Howe which is decidedly less silly and took a break to draw this one which is totally, one hundred percent silly. Old Greek dudes never said 'fat butts,' but you'll never take my degree away! I hid it.

I'm pretty sure they did. And still do. In Greek.Old Greek.

Herodotus is my favorite dead Greek guy. Guy had some awesome stories, and I can only imagine how much more interesting our history would be if he wrote about, say, World War II. It'd be all Winston Churchill punching out Nazi werewolves or something.

I recently discovered your online internet webcomic and despite my complete lack of ghetto cred, I'm forced to proclaim that it is THE bomb.

Love your expressive, beautiful art
Love learning things and stuff
Love seeing famous historical figures talking like modern teenagers

Keep that shit up.

So, those giant ants? Yeah, that's right, they're friggin' real, although you could maybe say that Herodotus was maybe a smidge too literal in his understanding of the Persian "mountain ant" (and where that sacrificing the male camels came from, who knows, and his rejection of the real explanation for the source of the Nile's floods versus his explanation - that the Sun gets really close to Earth and blows rainclouds off course and into the Nile - is just adorable lies now I guess) but, you know, at least Herodotus didn't get exiled because he lost a whole island to the enemy, and an important one at that, because he was screwing around on some other one.

Okay, so maybe I do care.

also herodotus isn't boring and dry as a bone, and it's not like thucydides doesn't digress himself sometimes

Do you mind if it gets used, with proper attribution to you, in some first year university history classes?
