In Which Joey Comeau Appears

« previous entry | next entry »

In all fairness it is probably that I'm not smart enough to get what Joey is talking about. I got to read his recent scary stories and they are so good.

ps my email has been going beep beep beep all morning with new livejournal people! I don't know where y'all are coming from, but hello!

HAHA. This has made my day. I love Joey Comeau, though. I met him with a friend at a writer's festival. We both agreed he is so adorable that we want to just take him home and put him on a shelf or something, or stick him in a pile of teddybears.

This one's so awesome, and I've gotten that reaction whenever I go into a linguistics rant or discussion from my friends too.

oh man! I bet they were awesome. Joey & Kate in one comic - too much awesome?

also, I have been your friend on here for a while, but a couple of nights ago I did StumbleUpon one of your comics - maybe that has to do with the increase in friends?

anyway, NEAT.

Linguistics is so not boring! :P I am scandalised.

I'd wished MTA had more Linguistics courses, or that I'd given a damn enough to switch to a school that did. But there's undergraduate lethargy, for you! I couldn't bear to leave Sackville before it was time. But it doesn't matter anymore anyway because I am an exciting librarian let me tell you.

It isn't boring, I agree! Just...everybody who writes about it tends to do so boringly (or at least those who did that we surveyed in my linguistic anthropology course, anyway....except for this one guy who just went the linguistic equivalent of GOING TO TOWN on his paper, and that, at least, was pretty flippin' awesome to review.)

Beat: It's not that you aren't smart enough! You just have too much smart and clever in other sections of your brain, and that part won't give it up to the rest. You must teach your brain TO SHARE.

I don't know where y'all are coming from, but hello!

I think several of us newbies learnt of you via this post. I hope friending you without asking first was okay, but I just supposed you wouldn't mind, since your f-list is already pretty huge... Your historical comics are the most amusing thing I've come across in a while (maybe studying history helps loving them *g*) but I also like the conversations with your younger self. *happily digs back into your older posts* So... Let me stay? *puppy eyes*

A post on metafilter links to a Jack Chick tract on [info]scans_daily, so I suspect a lot of people are going and looking at that (like me) and then they probably look around the community and see this and like your work and so add you (also like me). Great stuff! :-)

Don't worry, Ms. Beaton. We, the people who knew you for a short time before this recent influx of newcomers will protect you!

I am a meat shield.

Linguistics! The only thing more exciting than semantics is Latent Semantics. They're there, lurking in your soup! Allow me to program your computers to extract them.

No, that doesn't work. Not even with the interrobang.

Maybe they're less like flies and more like animal crackers?

My theory is that it's completely normal to find linguistics boring and completely abnormal to stand around with other weirdos going "whale. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaale. Whale. Do you hear a diphthong in there? I think I hear a diphthong. Is it a regional accent? Well, how does everyone else pronounce it?"

If that is wrong, I don't want to be right.

PS it totally is a diphthong is pretty much all dialects of English; offgliding is one of those things that makes us sound stupid when we try to speak Italian.

I love the way you drew your left hand for "no".... such simple lines but you captured that gesture in a lovely way. hands are notoriously difficult to draw!
