the best stereotype

« previous entry | next entry »

Canadians have it good. Of all the stereotypes in the world, being branded as polite and extraordinarily nice is maybe the best deal anyone got.

All jokes aside, there is definite point to make about the Northwest Mounted Police. For all the parody they endure, there was a marked difference between the wild west of America and the wild west of Canada, and that was the Mounties, an organized and intelligent law enforcement- organized being the operative word. Look further into their history, you won't be disappointed.

ABOUT THE BOOK AGAIN

Edit:

Holly from Topatoco says: "The book is not actually sold out! We still have a couple hundred copies left but they will probably be gone by the end of the week. BUY NOW."

phew!

"Due South" is the only point of reference I have for the RCMP, but it provides proof that it is both extraordinarily nice AND awesome.

Sold out ALREADY??? Aargh! Yes, please let us know when another run is available! (I mean, congrat's and all, but...)

ALso -- okay, do you have recommendations for good histories of the Mountains, and of Canada's "wild west", "wild northwest", "wild trapping" period? (Or heck, a related question: are there good series of historical fiction that deal with that period/setting?)

There are a few good stories from the period in Pirates and Outlaws of Canada: 1610 to 1932 by Harold Horwood and Ed Butts :)

This is what I keep telling my Canadian stepfather when he rages about how everyone thinks Canadians are so nice. Being nice is a GOOD thing. It's much better than being branded as fat and ignorant and greedy like Americans are!

Will you have them for TCAF? I like the buying in person what with the embarrassing hi-I'm-your-fan conversations and such.

I think you can tell a lot about the differences between Americans and Canadians by the fact that Canadians actually took the time to establish rule of law in their western turf before letting settlers move out there, whereas Americans waited, oh, half a century in some places.

We Michiganders hold our Canadian neighbors in pretty high regard. In fact, we have our own little mini-Canada... the upper peninsula!

It doesn't mean we don't make fun of them ourselves on time-to-time.

Yay Michiganders and yay your fabulous icon!

Sometimes I wish I could be Canadian, especially while watching Due South. I feel like that gives you permission to gently tease them once in a while.

You have made me truly excited to read about the Wild West of Canada. I'm imagining bandits firing their pistols and then being captured by mounties and having to go to bed without supper.
