Maaann everything is bottoming out in this ruddy economy isn't it? Well it doesn't have to, and a spreading some awareness helps a little, why, you never know!
First thing, many have probably seen, the Tesla Science Center wants to save Wardenclyffe, Nikola Tesla's only surviving laboratory and turn it into the museum it should be. Why is it in danger? Tea Fougner wrote to me, explaining:
"The lab is currently for sale for $1.6 million dollars and the owners, Agfa (the film people) are threatening to raze the buildings in spite of the state acknowledging their importance as an historical landmark."
We are all Tesla fans here! Give the ladies a place to throw their bloomers! You can donate via a paypal link Tea set up on her account because the Science Center doesn't have one. To go the old fashioned way, you can also send the Center a check at the address on their website! Honestly, scientists! Aren't they supposed to be up on debits and Google Victory Bonds and all that?
Secondly, I'm on the mailing list for The Walrus magazine. Not unexpectedly, considering the number of magazines that have recently folded, I got the email that said "please support us, we need it, for real this time." Now, the Walrus is a rarity in this country, it is a Canadian general interest magazine with an international outlook, supported by a non-profit foundation, and it is really, really good. The sort of thing (among a few others, Geist, Maisonneuve, etc) that I look at and say 'man, it would be really cool to work there someday.' For anyone not in this country, it is a very good read with a different point of view! So you should check it out, I am all for supporting the arts - especially since arts funding in Canada makes me fall to my knees weeping. Perhaps it is something you would like to subscribe to! Best to spread the word, in case.

In other news, I was soo excited when your store got 50 more copies of the book in stock, I'd been all planning to buy it when I got off work and when I discovered it was out of stock I was heartbroken! Thanks goodness for messy stockrooms or whatever caused that little miracle.

sometimes they will freak out and freeze the account for no reason. Somethingawful.com did a funding drive for the red cross after Katrina, and they froze the paypal account in question, refusing to even give the money to the red cross.
Here's hoping this goes a lot better.

First heard about him from watching that movie The Prestige (he was played by the fantastic David Bowie) and I found out he was real and freeked! then read your very cool and funny comic about him.
What a great and overlooked figure of history he is. I'm a little annoyed that the science community aren't kicking up a stink about making his lab a historic landmark.

Donation sent, and I'm going to have to check and see if author Spider Robinson is aware of this and can rally some support among his fan base, as Mr. Robinson is quite the Tesla fan, and frequently resurrects him in his novels.

Also the Tesla historian lady in that documentary that was fangirling over being at Wardenclyffe would be sad if it was torn down, and we don't want that.
